Quiet

Day 6! I’m posting a blog a day till we are published! Each blog will have some connection to a Paul Simon song because, well, he’s an amazing lyricist!

When I see snow is on the way, I immediately think of quiet! A snowy day and a calm night, the snow deadens the sounds from the freeway 3 miles away from my house.

I enjoy watching the snow as it falls, far more now that we have a service that will clear our driveway and walkways! Watching our dogs play in the snow always brings a smile to my lips. They love to jump in the snowdrifts.

My eldest daughter Jean and I talked about the enormous piles of snow formed by the snowplows. Jean recalled that when she and her sister Kym were relatively young, they loved to summit the mountains of snow piled up at the edge of the local grocery store parking lot.

In 1967, when I was just twelve years old, we had one heck of snowstorm in Chicago. With nearly two feet of snow falling in two days, the streets were empty and the sidewalks impassable. My family needed milk, and I was tasked with making my way to the corner to get a gallon. After shoveling my way down to the shop, I was highly disappointed to find that it was closed. No one was venturing out in the storm.

We’re expecting snow tonight! Bring on the quiet!
